A huge thanks to the National Guard for landing helicopters at middle schools around the county, and to all of our volunteers for making the week a memorable one!

YOUTH MARIJUANA PREVENTION INITIATIVE
WHAT:
The Catalyst Coalition has launched a county-wide effort to address teen marijuana use by engaging community leaders in the development and implementation of an action plan. Similar to the coalition's successful strategy to combat teen alcohol use, the marijuana prevention initiative targets environmental factors that influence drug use such as policies and regulations, cultural norms, and youth access.
WHY:
The California Healthy Kids Survey conducted in 2009 showed that marijuana use among Napa County high school students grew between 3 and 5% over the past 5 years and approximately 78% of area high school juniors believe marijuana is easy to get.
Marijuana is addictive. More teens are in treatment with a primary diagnosis of marijuana dependence than for all other illicit drugs combined.*
Using marijuana can also lead to disturbed perceptions and thoughts; moreover, marijuana use can worsen psychotic symptoms in people who have schizophrenia.*
There are higher rates of depression, anxiety and suicidal thinking among people who use marijuana when compared to people who don't use. Teens who start using marijuana before age 15 are more likely to suffer from anxiety and depression in early adulthood. A new study shows that smoking marijuana is associated with a 40% increase risk of psychosis, and the risk is greater among regular and frequent users.*

HOW:
Using the Strategic Prevention Framework (see Strategic Plan page) from the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America, Catalyst Coalition will work with community members to create a five-year plan that includes assessment, planning, capacity building, implementation, and evaluation.
